What is an NFC business card?
An NFC business card is a physical card containing a small wireless chip that, when tapped to a smartphone, opens a digital profile in the phone's browser. No app is needed — the phone reads the chip and loads the page automatically.
What's actually inside the card
The card itself looks like a standard business card but contains an NFC (Near Field Communication) chip embedded in the material. The chip stores a short URL — nothing more. When a phone's NFC reader comes within a few centimeters of the card, it reads that URL and opens it in a browser. The real content (your name, links, contact info) lives on a profile page, not on the chip itself.
What shows up when someone taps it
What the recipient sees depends entirely on what you've built on your profile page. At minimum, most people include a name, title, company, phone, email, and a save-contact button that downloads a vCard. More complete profiles add social links, a portfolio, a headshot, a short bio, and sometimes a lead capture form. The profile is a live web page, so you can update it anytime without touching the card.
How it differs from a traditional business card
A paper card is static — once printed, the information is fixed and eventually outdated. An NFC card's profile is always current because you update the page, not the card. You also get data: most NFC card platforms show you how many times your card has been tapped and what links people clicked. Paper gives you nothing after the handoff.
Do you need an app to receive an NFC business card?
No. The recipient's phone reads the NFC chip natively and opens a browser page. No app download is needed on either end.
Can you update an NFC business card after you get it?
Yes. The chip points to a URL, and you update the content at that URL whenever you want. The card itself never needs to be reprinted.
What's the difference between an NFC card and a QR code card?
NFC requires a tap — the phone picks up the signal passively. QR codes require the recipient to open their camera app, frame the code, and scan it. NFC is faster and requires less effort from the recipient.
