How fast is NFC — what is the read speed?
The NFC chip itself reads in under 100 milliseconds. The full experience — tap, read the URL, open the browser, and load the profile page — takes about 0.5 to 1.5 seconds depending on the phone and network speed.
Breaking down the tap-to-profile timeline
Phase 1 (chip read): The phone's NFC antenna detects the chip and reads the URL — under 100ms. Phase 2 (URL handoff): The operating system receives the URL and opens the browser — about 50–200ms. Phase 3 (page load): The browser requests and loads the profile page over the internet — 300ms to 1 second on a good connection, longer on poor connectivity. Total: typically under 1 second on a fast network.
Factors that affect perceived speed
The NFC read itself is consistent and fast. What varies is the network response time. A profile on a well-optimized CDN-backed server loads quickly; a profile on a slow server feels sluggish even though the tap was instant. Phone processor speed affects how quickly the browser renders the loaded page.
Is NFC faster than QR codes for getting to a profile?
Yes. A QR scan requires opening the camera app, framing and focusing on the code, and waiting for recognition — typically 3–6 seconds minimum. NFC is sub-second.
Can slow NFC reads indicate a problem?
If the chip read itself is slow (>2 seconds to register), the phone may be having trouble finding the chip. Adjust the position. If the profile loads slowly after the tap, it's a network/server issue, not an NFC issue.
Does NFC speed vary between chip types?
Marginally. NTAG213 and NTAG216 have comparable read speeds — the difference is imperceptible to users.
