How many times can an NFC card be tapped?
NFC chips have no practical limit on the number of taps. The chip is a passive electronic component with no battery or moving parts — it can be read hundreds of thousands of times without degrading.
Why NFC chips don't wear out from tapping
Reading an NFC chip is a passive radio frequency operation. Nothing physically happens — no contact, no wear, no energy drawn from the chip. The NTAG213 and NTAG216 chips used in most NFC business cards are rated by their manufacturers for 100,000+ write cycles (changing the stored data), but reads — which is all tapping does — are effectively unlimited.
What does wear out
The physical card itself will show wear before the chip does. The edges scuff, the surface scratches, the laminate can peel on lower-quality cards. Some cards are rated for specific conditions (wallet use vs. badge use vs. outdoor exposure). The chip, by contrast, will outlast the card material in virtually every real-world scenario.
Can an NFC chip be damaged?
Yes — by physical destruction (bending, puncturing the chip area), extreme heat, or being near a very strong electromagnetic field. Normal use, including thousands of taps, won't damage it.
Do NFC chips expire?
No. There's no expiration date on an NFC chip. The profile URL it points to can expire if you stop maintaining the platform subscription, but the chip itself doesn't.
Can I reuse an NFC card for a different person?
If the chip is writable, yes — you can update the URL it stores. Most NFC business card platforms lock the chip to prevent this, but some allow reassignment.
