Does NFC work in airplane mode?
On most phones, enabling airplane mode disables NFC along with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular. However, many Android phones allow you to re-enable NFC (and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi) individually after turning on airplane mode. iPhones disable NFC in airplane mode without a re-enable option for tag reading.
iPhone in airplane mode
When airplane mode is on, NFC background tag reading is disabled on iPhone. You can re-enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth manually after enabling airplane mode (Apple allows this), but NFC tag reading cannot be re-enabled without turning off airplane mode. This is relevant on flights or in areas that restrict wireless signals.
Android in airplane mode
On most Android phones, airplane mode disables all radios including NFC. However, Android typically lets you manually re-enable individual radios after setting airplane mode. Go to Settings → Connections → NFC and turn it back on. This varies by manufacturer and Android version.
Can I use an NFC card at an event that requires airplane mode?
If NFC is disabled, you'd need to share your profile URL or QR code instead. In practice, most events that require airplane mode (secure government facilities, etc.) won't have NFC networking anyway.
Does airplane mode affect the card itself?
No — the card is passive and has no radio to disable. Airplane mode only affects the phone's ability to read it.
Why does airplane mode disable NFC if NFC is so short-range?
Regulatory compliance: airplane mode is required to disable all wireless transmitters. Even though NFC range is tiny, it's technically a radio transmission.
