Do you need an app to use NFC business cards?
No app is required to receive an NFC business card. The recipient's phone reads the chip natively and opens a browser — the same way it would open any website. The person sharing the card may use an app or website to manage their profile, but the receiving end requires nothing.
How the receiving side works
Modern smartphones — iPhone (XS and later), most Android devices from 2016 onward — can read NFC tags in the background without any app open. When the phone detects an NFC chip, the operating system takes over, reads the URL stored on the chip, and opens it in the default browser. The recipient sees a profile page load, just as if they'd clicked a link. Nothing to download, nothing to install.
What about the person sharing the card
The person whose card it is typically uses a web-based dashboard to set up and update their profile. Some platforms offer a companion app for analytics, notifications, and quick edits. But the app is for management convenience — the card works regardless of whether the sharer has any app installed.
What if the recipient has never used NFC before?
They don't need to know anything about NFC. Tapping a card feels like nothing — their phone just opens a page, which looks like any website.
Do NFC cards work on iPhones without the NFC reader app?
Yes. Since iOS 11, iPhones can read NFC tags in the background without any app. iOS 14 and later support it even more broadly.
Can the recipient save your contact info without an app?
Yes. Most NFC card profiles include a 'Save Contact' button that downloads a vCard file, which the phone's native contacts app opens and saves directly.
