Do both people need NFC enabled to use an NFC business card?
Only the recipient's phone needs NFC capability. The person handing over the card doesn't need any special device or app — they're just holding a physical card. The recipient needs an NFC-enabled phone, which covers virtually every smartphone made after 2015.
What the card holder needs
Nothing beyond the physical card. You don't need your phone, you don't need an app open, you don't need NFC enabled on your own phone. The card is passive and self-contained. It works the same whether you hand it to someone while your phone is in your pocket or at home.
What the recipient needs
An NFC-enabled smartphone with NFC reading capability. On Android: NFC must be enabled in settings (Settings → Connections → NFC). On iPhone: NFC background tag reading is enabled by default on iPhone XS and later — no setting to toggle. An internet data connection to load the profile page after the chip is read.
What if the recipient's phone doesn't have NFC?
Offer the QR code on the back of the card — most NFC cards include one as a fallback. Or share your profile URL verbally or via text.
What percentage of phones have NFC?
As of 2024, over 85% of smartphones globally are NFC-enabled. In the US, where flagship and mid-range phones dominate, the figure is higher.
Can you force-enable NFC on an older phone?
No — NFC is a hardware feature. If the phone was manufactured without an NFC chip, no software update or setting can add it.
