Can iPhones read NFC business cards?
Yes. iPhones can read NFC business cards without any app. iPhone XS (2018) and later support background NFC tag reading — the phone reads the chip automatically when you tap. Earlier models down to iPhone 7 need a manual step in the NFC reader app.
iPhone NFC capability by model
iPhone 7 and 8 (iOS 11): Can read NFC tags but require opening the NFC reader app first — not automatic. iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, and later (iOS 13+): Full background NFC tag reading — automatic when the phone is awake. iPhone 12 and later: Also support NFC in some locked-screen scenarios. iPhone XS is the practical cutoff for a seamless tap experience.
How it works on modern iPhones
On iPhone XS and later running iOS 13+, you simply hold the top of the phone near the NFC card. A banner appears at the top of the screen; tapping the banner opens the profile in Safari. No app needed, no settings to change. NFC reading is enabled by default and cannot be disabled by the user. The top edge of the iPhone is where the NFC antenna is strongest — this is the area to align with the card.
What about very old iPhones
iPhone 6s and earlier have no NFC reading capability at all — they have NFC hardware only for Apple Pay, which is locked to Apple's payment use case. For these phones, the QR code on the back of the NFC card is the solution.
Where is the NFC antenna on an iPhone?
On all iPhones, the NFC antenna runs along the top edge. The strongest reading position is the upper-center back of the phone, near the camera area.
Does iPhone NFC require the NFC reader app?
On iPhone XS and later with iOS 13+, no. Background tag reading handles it automatically. On iPhone 7 and 8, the NFC reader app (built-in since iOS 11) must be opened first.
Can iPhones write to NFC tags?
Yes — iPhones can write to writable NFC tags using apps like NFC Tools. Most NFC business card chips are locked by the platform to prevent overwriting.
